It's finally here -SHOW TIME- and that means it's now time for us to start showing off our orchids and treating ourselves by attending orchid shows.
Entering plants to win ribbons, shopping for orchids, visiting with friends from
all over the state and country, learning about orchids, seeing orchids we've
never seen before, ooh'ing and ahh'ing over creative displays, and lots of fun --
this is what orchid shows are all about! We don't want you to miss out on any of
the upcoming shows, so a listing of some of the closer shows, and also ones that
the Michigan Orchid Society will be participating in are as follows:
1 Greater Lansing Orchid Society - 14th Annual Orchid Show
Display setup is Friday, February 21 from 1:00-11:00 p.m. The show is open to the
public Saturday, February 22 - 1:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 23 -
11:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m. The show is being held at the Plant & Soil Science
Conservatory at Michigan State University, SW Corner Bogue St. & Wilson Rd.. East
Lansing, MI. (There will be plenty of signs located on the campus to direct you
to the greenhouses.) MOS will have a 100 sq. ft. display at this show.
2 Michigan Orchid Society Palm Sunday Show
Display setup Friday, March 21 Show open to the public. Saturday, March 22 - 1:00
p.m - 9:00 p.m. and Sunday March 23 from 12:00 Noon - 5:00 p.m. The show is being
held at the Laurel Park Mall, 6 Mile Road just east of I-275 in Livonia, MI.
3 Ann Arbor Flower and Garden Show
MOS will put up an orchid display at this very popular flower and garden show.
The show is being held April 3-6 at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann
Arbor-Saline Road in Ann Arbor, MI. The theme for this show is "An American
Bouquet". Show times are: April 3, 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., April 6 from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m.
4 Ann Arbor Orchid Festival- hosted by the
Ann Arbor Orchid Society
This orchid show will be held at the Matthei Botanical Gardens in Ann
Arbor. Setup will be Friday, April 18, and the show is open to the public on
April 19 and 20. The MOS will be putting up a display at the show. More details
will be provided when they're available.
Palm Sunday Show
Our Palm Sunday Show is just around the corner. Before we know it, it'll be here.
It's not too early to start thinking about what you will like to contribute to
the success of the show. Remember, the greater the number of helpers, the less
work there is to do. We had a large turnout or help at our show last year and it
worked wonderfully! Let's plan to do even better this year. Please sign up to
volunteer to help at the show. Even an hour or two of your time would be
appreciated. If you can offer more -- that's great too. We will be needing help
with the following:
Thursday night setup at the mall - 9:00 p.m. till we're done.
Last year we finished early because we had a large turnout of help. What we
do on Thursday is set up all the sales tables, exhibit space - hang the black curtains, put
down plastic on the floor, arrange the display area for the backdrops, etc. It can be a lot
of fun - come see what it looks like before all the orchids are in place. Call me to sign up
- or just show up on Thursday.
Friday -
We need volunteers to assist societies and vendors in bringing their
plants and display materials to their exhibit location and MOS display set-up
helpers.
Saturday and Sunday -
Clerks for judging, Information Table hosts, tear-down
helpers.
So you see, there really is a lot to do. Have fun - get involved! New Members -
this is a great opportunity for you to meet fellow orchidists and learn more
